richard meier, the storied pritzker architecture prize winning architect, world famous for his getty center masterpiece, part of a grand career since opening his practice in 1963, has a lesser-known side to his abundant creativity.
richard meier began making collages almost 55 years ago, as a student in rome collecting crumpled papers and other detritus he found strewn throughout the city's ancient streets. "many of the early ones were done during long flights or in the waiting areas at airports, you could read for awhile, but on long trips you'd start to get groggy after six hours, so i carried a box with me, containing glue and the various materials for the collages, ... that's sort of where it all began."
over the years richard meier’s artistic practice has also expanded in parallel with his architectural practice, which has resulted in an impressive portfolio of collages. saturated with rich color and a myriad of different textures, the collages seem at first glance to contradict his architectural style and design; however, the collages complement his architecture in various, unexpected ways, recording the artist’s creative process and offering a contrast to the rigidity of architectural drawings.
he works in a large, light-filled room with several wide tables on which he lays out material for the collages, sometimes working on several of them at the same time. speaking about making the collages, the architect becomes animated: he is happiest, he says, making art.
